Member’s Rights and Responsibilities

Members have the right to:

  • Be treated with respect and in terms of their dignity and right to privacy.
  • Receive information about Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Healthcare Solutions (Anthem), our services, PCPs and providers, and their rights and responsibilities.
  • Choose a PCP who is part of the Anthem network and to refuse care from specific PCPs and providers.
  • Participate in the decision-making process for their health care.
  • Express and expect resolution of grievances and appeals.
  • Create an advance directive to tell their doctor the kind of care they want if they are not able to communicate their decisions.
  • Have access to their medical records in agreement with all federal and state laws and be able to request the records be changed or corrected in agreement with federal and state laws.
  • Make suggestions about the Member Rights and Responsibility Policy
  • Be free from any form of restraint or seclusion used as a means of coercion, discipline, convenience or retaliation.
  • Get information on available treatment options and alternatives in a way they are able to understand.

Members have the responsibility to:

  • Provide information, the best that they can, to help Anthem and our providers give the right care.
  • Follow instructions and guidelines given by Anthem, their PCP and other providers
  • Understand their health problems and work with their PCP and providers to find an agreed upon plan to help treat their illness or condition.
  • Notify Anthem if they have other health insurance.
  • Carry their member ID card at all times.
